The upcoming 8th Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Materials and Renewable Energies (EMCMRE-8) in Marrakech (June 29 to July 2, 2026) is shaping up to be a major milestone for the battery research community. Since its launch in 2011, this conference series has been a vital bridge linking materials scientists across Europe and the Mediterranean. This year, the stakes are higher than ever as the global demand for sustainable energy storage accelerates.
We are incredibly proud to share that the critical Energy Storage session will be chaired by our partner, Dr. Abdelfattah Mahmoud from GREEnMat!
Dr. Mahmoud’s session will bring together a fantastic group of invited experts, including heavy hitters from the STREAMS consortium who are actively reshaping the European battery lifecycle. He will be joined on stage by our Project Coordinator Damian Cupid (AIT Austrian Institute of Technology) and our partner Prof. Ulla Lassi from (University of Oulu). Alongside guest experts Dr. Jolanta Swiatowska and Dr. Mustapha Balarabe Idris, the panel will map out the bleeding edge of energy storage materials and sustainable recycling technology.
Spotlighting direct recycling
A major focus of the session will be finding innovative pathways to bypass traditional, resource-heavy recycling methods. Dr. Mahmoud will showcase STREAMS’ latest breakthroughs in the direct recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries. By developing new processes for sustainable cathode regeneration, the project aims to drastically reduce carbon footprints and help build a genuinely resilient European battery value chain.
Empowering the next generation of scientists
EMCMRE has always had a unique and valuable goal: crafting a space where senior experts and young researchers collaborate seamlessly. The 2026 program places a massive emphasis on the participation of Master and PhD students from both sides of the Mediterranean.
For these students, this session is a goldmine. It is a direct opportunity to network with the STREAMS team and explore future avenues for internships, PhD positions, and postdoctoral fellowships.
