STREAMS First General Assembly at TÜBITAK facilities: Reviewing progress and planning the future

The first General Assembly of the STREAMS Project was held on June 13-14, 2024, at the cutting-edge facilities of TÜBITAK RUTE in Ankara, Türkiye. This milestone event gathered representatives from the project’s partner organisations to review the achievements of the first six months and discuss the roadmap ahead.

Reflecting on the first 6 months

The assembly brought together key stakeholders to assess the project’s progress and strategize for the future. The agenda included comprehensive discussions on essential work packages and upcoming initiatives.

June 13th: The assembly opened with welcome remarks from the project coordinator, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, and TÜBITAK. The discussions covered various topics, including project coordination, financial reporting, communication strategies, and the preprocessing and characterization of resources.

June 14th: The second day began with a summary of the first day’s discussions, followed by sessions on the characterization and electrochemical testing of active materials to pouch cells, and assessments of sustainability, risk, and circularity.

TÜBITAK Laboratory Tour: A highlight of the Assembly

A significant highlight of the first day was the extensive tour of TÜBITAK’s laboratories. Participants received an in-depth look at the advanced research and development activities of TÜBITAK’s Energy Storage Systems Group. The tour showcased TÜBITAK’s capabilities in battery technology, including the design and production of components for secondary batteries, the development of materials, cells, and battery modules, and the rigorous testing processes for various storage technologies.

Attendees were particularly impressed by TÜBITAK’s innovative solutions for lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, lead-acid, and gel batteries. A standout moment was the demonstration of reduced-cobalt electrode and cell production from recycled materials, aligning perfectly with STREAMS’ sustainability goals and the objective of reducing dependence on critical raw materials.

Key Milestones Achieved

The first six months of the STREAMS project have seen significant progress, with several key milestones achieved:

  • The first batch of primary, secondary, and recycled battery mass sources has been delivered;
  • The first batch of recycled graphite has been produced.

Deliverables Submitted

The project has successfully submitted several crucial deliverables regarding project management, self-assessment, the characterization of primary resources, and the communication and dissemination strategy:

  • D.1.1: Project Plans (WP1) – AIT
  • D1.2: Project Handbook (WP1) – AIT
  • D1.3: Data Management Plan (WP1) – AIT
  • D1.4: Self-Assessment Plan (WP1) – AIT
  • D2.1: Report on Initial Characterization of Primary Resources (WP2) – AIT
  • D8.1: Dissemination and Communication Strategy (WP8) – F6S

Looking Ahead

The STREAMS project continues to make significant strides towards securing Europe’s battery materials supply chain and fostering sustainable technological advancements. The collaborative efforts and insights gained from this assembly will guide the next phases of the project, ensuring continued progress and innovation in the field.

Next Steps and Milestones for the Next Six Months

  • First batch of recycled nano silicon: WP5 10 – NPW. Nano silicon received by the partners in WP5.
  • Second batch of secondary and recycled battery mass sources delivered: WP2 1.
  • First batch of lithium (lithium hydroxide or carbonate): WP3.

These upcoming milestones will further strengthen the project’s objectives and enhance the sustainability and efficiency of Europe’s battery materials supply chain.
