STREAMS General Assembly in Kokkola: Driving battery innovation forward in year two

On 17-18 June 2025, the STREAMS consortium met in Kokkola, Finland, for its third General Assembly, an important milestone halfway through our 36-month project. Hosted by the Research Unit of Sustainable Chemistry from University of Oulu, the event brought together researchers, industry players, and stakeholders to take stock of progress, tackle challenges, and define the next steps to strengthen Europe’s battery materials supply chain.

Key moments from Kokkola

In its first year, STREAMS has made strides in develoOver two intense days of presentations, workshops, and field visits, STREAMS partners aligned on priorities to scale sustainable battery technologies. The meeting focused on:

  • Coordination & delivery – Streamlining collaboration to hit key milestones (WP1 – AIT)
  • Sustainability & circularity – Embedding responsible resource use and risk management in all processes (WP7 – ICL)
  • Advanced testing – Pushing electrochemical testing and characterisation from material level to pouch cells (WP6 – AIT)
  • Communication & impact – Boosting outreach, stakeholder engagement, and exploitation (WP8 – F6S)
  • Precursor innovation – Progress on graphite, silicon, lithium, and transition metal precursor production (WPs 2-5 – Eti Gubre, NPW, UOulu, ULIE)

Workshops and group discussions helped refine the technical and strategic roadmap, ensuring that STREAMS stays on track to deliver impact.

KIP industrial tour: bridging research and industry

The General Assembly also included a tour of the Kokkola Industrial Park (KIP), where partners explored key industrial facilities. An industry workshop featured presentations from Hycamite TCD, Jervois Finland and Tracegrow, offering insights into their approaches and innovations related to battery material production and sustainability.

This exchange provided valuable context for STREAMS’ work and highlighted synergies with industrial practices.

Looking ahead

As STREAMS advances, the consortium remains focused on scaling technological progress, meeting project milestones, and contributing to a more sustainable and competitive European battery value chain.
